The Sankofa Project is part of an on-going historical initiative started by Rev. Michael A. Walrond, Jr., Executive Pastor at the First Corinthian Baptist Church in Harlem, New York. Pastor Mike expressed a desire for the church congregants to explore their cultural and historical legacy, and so the Sankofa Project was born. In the Akan language, spoken in Ghana, Sankofa means “Reach back/Return and Get it,” so the Sankofa bird looks back to the past, taking what is good, while holding the egg of the future. The proverb regarding the Sankofa bird says: “It is not wrong to go back to get that which you have forgotten.”
